What is Giftedness?
As defined by the National Association for Gifted Children:
Giftedness, intelligence, and talent are fluid concepts and may look different in different contexts and cultures. Even within schools you will find a range of beliefs about the word "gifted," which has become a term with multiple meanings and much nuance. Gifted children may develop asynchronously: their minds are often ahead of their physical growth, and specific cognitive and social-emotional functions can develop unevenly.
It is important to remember that giftedness functions as a spectrum. Students may have high intelligence but struggle with low school performance. They may excel in mathematics and logical problem solving, yet are challenged linguistically. They may have a deep understanding of the world around them and be able to empahsize with a variety of viewpoints, yet struggle with one-on-one social skills with peers their own age. Many gifted students also possess additional talents within the fine arts, such as musical and/or artistic ability.
The keys to a successful gifted classroom are: 1) recognizing each individual's strengths and areas of growth, 2) challenging each student within a safe environment and 3) designing curriculum and learning opportunities which nuture and engage the "whole child". Teaching to the "whole child" requires teacher understanding and student self-awareness. Aside from academics, much emphasis within the Joplin Gifted Program is placed on character development, problem solving and community building.
